WHEN WORKING OUT TOO HARD DOESN”T PAY
When people are working out hard in the gym, and eating a pristine diet, they expect that they will achieve the body they desire. They have been programmed by our media to believe they will deserve it.
Then, they reach a point where they have put all the hard work in that they thought they needed to put in, and still it hasn’t happened. The results are not there. And then they say “I deserve this, I have worked so hard”. It is quickly followed by “What is the point?”. Resentment and giving up are soon to follow.
I believe that a certain amount of it is personal effort, and then there is the grace of God. Our body performs miracles daily, and yet our mind can influence how it unfolds. Surrender is the gateway for grace. When we surrender, we release attachment, and the highest good unfolds.
I have clients who have worked hard, followed their but gusting workouts daily, and eating without error, but still not achieving what they wanted. Then, these same people have chosen to be kinder to themselves, picked exercise that they enjoy more, and allowed themselves the odd chocolate bar, and they have seen more results. They felt better. The results came more effortlessly. Over time they find they don’t even want that chocolate bar, and eating healthy becomes natural for them.
They have chosen a different mindset with regard to health. They have made it easier for themselves through their daily choices.
I love what Robert Holden says in his book “Happiness Now”. We have developed a work ethic in our world that we have to deserve something to have it, that we have to work for it, that we get it when it is earned and that we have to pay for it. He states that these are the roots of much of our suffering in the world today.
A GRUELLING WORKOUT
Millions put themselves through gruelling workouts each week with the aim of being happy. Believing that if they work hard enough, they will earn the body they want. They end up making it alot harder than it actually needs to be. I love a vigorous workout, but I don’t make it half as hard as I used to, and I accomplish more.
Practice self-acceptance daily, be happy in the now, be kind to yourself, and play. Your body will love you for it, and you are worthy. It is not something that you have to deserve. These are all states of mind that you can choose right here, right now. And as you choose them, your world will mirror it back to you.
I used to workout hard, with the intention of building a particular body shape and followed the conditioning program of the foremost experts in the field of strength and conditioning. I often did not get the results that I set out to achieve. My attachment to the outcome was slowing down achievement of my true desires.
I still follow those coaches guidelines. But, I have learned to enjoy my workouts more, I pray without ceasing during my exercise time, I am choosing happiness and acceptance in the now, and my body has changed as a result.
My body has taken on the form that nature intended, instead of one that I was trying to force upon it. Whenever I find myself disliking anything about myself, I welcome in the grace of God as I find self-acceptance within myself. Then change occurs with ease.
This is what I wish for you. You are worthy of health and fitness. They are your birthright, not something that you have to work hard to deserve. There is work involved but it is work that you love doing, exercise that you love doing, that will yield the greatest happiness.
Thoughts of self-acceptance will lead to happiness now, and through each moment that you own this within yourself, you step closer to your vision of health as happiness begets happiness.
