We can experience our workouts at many different levels. I remember the days when I went in and just slugged it out, hoping that my body would respond. I am grateful for the awareness of just how much better it feels when I bring the power of intention into it.
We can either be distracted by thoughts of the day, or self hatred or loathing of the extra body fat. Or we can allow our thoughts to be directed to thoughts of self-love, compassion and joy.
We just have to see the work of Dr Masaru Emoto to know that our thoughts and feelings throughout a workout have a profound affect on the outcome of it. Below you will see the difference between a water crystal when it is exposed to the feeling of gratitude and when it is something not so nice. Your body is made up largely of water. If our thoughts can do this to water crystals imagine what these thoughts do to you.
“Gratitude” ”You Make Me Sick”
Our workouts can be a time to deepen our connection to spirit. To experience the full wonder of the body as it adapts beyond what it could previously do.
As we transcend previous limitations we are witness to the miracles of nature coursing through us. Science can take us only so far with the workout. We can follow the best methods that promise strength gain and fat loss, but the thoughts that we think and our feelings, greatly affect our actions.
What are the steps that we can take for an awesome connected sacred workout, whether it is running, swimming, weight training or yoga?
Here are 4 simple steps that I take.
1) Visualise yourself beforehand, doing the workout that you are going to do. Maybe it is your intention to transcend your previous strength on a particular strength exercise or take a yoga posture to the next level.
Visualise it in your mind clearly. See yourself performing a set to completion. Research has shown that just thinking about exercise maintained muscle strength in individuals. This is perfect for the person who is currently injured awaiting a return to exercise.
Why are you doing the workout? When muscle tested, people who do their exercise or competition to fulfill the ego test weaker than those who are doing it for something greater than themselves. Their family, community or country.
2) Many people are ungrounded when they begin their workout program. Their heads are focused on a problem at work, with money or in a relationship. Create the intention of a mind-spirit-body connection before you begin your workout. Ground yourself. Close your eyes, become aware of your muscles working. Say a prayer for support throughout this workout time.
3) Be present with the workout. Focus on each lift, each movement of the body. If you are out running feel the hips moving, your ankle joints moving. Feel the gratitude for your body. Continue to reflect on the wonder of what is going on as you run or workout. Challenge yourself to stretch that little bit further.
4) After your workout take a few moments in reflection. Close your eyes. Feel how your body feels now after working out. How are your mind and body? Feel the gratitude for a workout well done. Or, if something came up that is challenging you, ask to know the gift in it.
These are some simple steps that we can each take to enjoy a more juicy experience of exercise and they are just a glimpse of what you will get to experience as part of my upcoming seminar in Victoria, BC on May 29th.
