I believe that responsibility has incurred a bad rap through misunderstanding. And clearing up that misunderstanding can really make all the difference in the world.
I always remember the line from Spiderman, “With great power comes great responsibility” and it used to scare me. I never wanted to grow up because of the responsibilities that came with it.
Don’t allow thoughts like this to take you away from your power. When you can handle the responsibilities that you currently have, then you will be able to handle greater responsibilities and will allow yourself to take them on. We don’t have to take it all on at once.
What is Responsibility?
Responsibility is NOT about 1) blaming others 2) blaming yourself or 3) blaming the world.
I see responsibilty as something to stand for in the moment, especially when it comes to health. You are responsible for that. Not your doctor, trainer, physiotherapist or chiropractor. They provide guidance but ultimately the choice comes down to you. I know too many people who pop pills, fully trusting their GP without asking even what is in it. Or taking a weight loss supplement because their friends taking it, without knowing how it may work with their own biochemistry.
You are responsible for your thoughts, feelings and actions in each moment. Not anyone else’s. It is about your ability to respond to situations in life. Do you respond to mistakes and failures with punishment or kindness. Your response will have a profound effect on the long term outcome.
When it comes to health and fitness, you are responsible for what goes in your mouth, what exercise you do, and all your thoughts feelings and actions. And releasing the need to blame others for the poor choices you have made, or the negative influences they may have had on you.
TAKING ON TOO MUCH
So many of the people that I work with end up with health conditions because they have taken on more responsibility than they needed to, and weighed themselves down as a result. They have become so overly responsible for others, that they have become irresponsible with regards to their own health.
Always commune with your higher self to seek what actions you can take in any given situation with regards to people and situations in your life. Be aware of the level of responsibility you are taking for your own life.
Release The Burden of Responsibility
It does not need to be a heavy burden but yet the shoulders of many in the world are weighted down by responsibilities they think they “should” be taking on. They take on responsibilities of the future that have not even happened yet, or hold on to burdens of the past, or take responsibility for things that they need not, in the now. Even worse, they are taking responsibility for something that really had nothing to do with them.
I would recommend some meditation time, with a clear question “What am I responsible for in my life at this time?” Sit with your higher self and begin to observe what comes to your awareness. Allow for anything that is not your responsibility at this time to be left alone.
May I suggest creating the intention to create peace with the word responsibility. It is not the word that is at fault, but people’s understanding and use of it. It creates intense feelings in a lot of people, what about you?
Did this cause a strong reaction within you? Maybe time for a little more exploration. Through one-on-one coaching I take people on a journey to understanding how responsibility affects all areas of life and how, when it is assumed, it creates very positive outcomes.
